YOUNGPOOL Auto Splitting Machine | How Automatic Empty Reel Detection Optimizes SMT Material Preparation
Aug 25, 2026
In SMT manufacturing, reel splitting is an important link between material preparation in the warehouse and component placement on the production line. As the variety of materials and the number of production batches continue to increase, material preparation requires not only attention to the quantity of components being split, but also verification of the condition of the carrier tape itself. If an empty reel or insufficient remaining material is not identified in time during the reel splitting process, it may increase the workload of subsequent manual verification and handling. Therefore, timely identification of carrier tape status during reel splitting is also an important factor in improving the stability of the material preparation process.
Traditional reel splitting operations mainly rely on operators to visually monitor the condition of the carrier tape. For simple, low-frequency material preparation tasks, this approach is relatively straightforward. However, in high-frequency reel splitting operations involving a wide variety of materials, operators need to continuously monitor the tape condition, increasing their workload. At the same time, prolonged repetitive operations can lead to oversights, making it more difficult to identify certain abnormal conditions in a timely manner during the reel splitting process.
To address this practical requirement, YOUNGPOOL independently developed the D-1 Intelligent Reel Splitting Machine. The machine supports automatic empty reel detection, integrating carrier tape status monitoring into the reel splitting process. During operation, the machine monitors the carrier tape and can promptly detect an empty reel condition and take the corresponding action, reducing the need for operators to continuously monitor the tape. Compared with processes that rely entirely on manual judgment, this automated detection capability helps make reel splitting operations more standardized.
The value of automatic empty reel detection goes beyond reducing one manual inspection step. More importantly, it enables abnormal conditions to be identified earlier in the material preparation process. After reel splitting, materials typically proceed to warehouse storage, line-side material preparation, or subsequent production processes. If an empty reel condition is not identified in time, additional material verification and handling may be required later. By detecting the condition during the reel splitting process, potential issues can be identified earlier and addressed before the materials move to the next stage.
The D-1 Intelligent Reel Splitting Machine also supports reel splitting for carrier tapes in widths of 8, 12, 16, and 24 mm, and is compatible with both paper and plastic carrier tapes. In SMT production environments where multiple material specifications are managed simultaneously, combining automatic empty reel detection with multi-size carrier tape compatibility can further reduce manual intervention and help maintain a more consistent operating process across different materials.
From the perspective of the overall material preparation process, automation is not simply about adding more machine operations. Instead, it involves coordinating functions such as detection, reel splitting, and component counting, allowing more repetitive tasks to be handled by the equipment. The D-1 Intelligent Reel Splitting Machine also supports component counting during reel splitting. Compared with manual operation, the efficiency of reel splitting and counting is increased by more than 30%, with counting accuracy exceeding 99%. These functions work together to gradually transform material preparation from a single material splitting operation into a more standardized process.
For SMT manufacturers, the value of warehouse automation ultimately lies in its contribution to actual production processes. Through functions such as automatic empty reel detection, the YOUNGPOOL D-1 Intelligent Reel Splitting Machine reduces unnecessary repetitive manual work during material preparation and enables material status verification to be performed earlier in the process, providing a more reliable foundation for subsequent warehousing and production operations.
